christmas in maui
i did say that my family went to maui for Christmas, right?
well, yesterday, my brother, andy, and i took kealani and kainoa up to kapalua bay to frolick in the waves…
we stopped by the side of the road and saw whales in the water. you can’t see em in this picture but this was our view of the beach that we ended up at. it’s the beach for the ritz-carlton, the one that will host the mercedes benz golf tourney on jan 1
walking thru the jungle trying to find a beach
and arriving at kapalua bay
you can’t really tell in this pic but the waves were huge!
see… they were huge! and yes… that IS what i looked like… and kainoa too! hahah…

the puen family Christmas
for Christmas this year my uncle roy decided to come to his vacation house here in maui, and he brought my grandma with him. my cousin mark (uncle herbert’s son) already lives here about 10 minutes away, and their family came out too. my dad and mom couldn’t make it but my brother, andy, and i came to join the puen family Christmas here in maui. =)
so here are my cousins and nieces and nephews surrounding my grandma outside cafe o’lei in kihei, maui
my brother and i just met our aunt jenny and her daughter carla
but the real star of this Christmas is my 93-year-old grandma jessie
here she is with most of her great grandchildren (kealani is missing from this picture, but you can see ryan, kainoa (who’s hugging her), kaili, and megan)

some more pictures we took on our sunday “hike” - it really was more of a photo shoot than any type of hike.... anyways, you can click on the pics for larger versions…
my dad and my mom
first attempt - trying to peek out from behind the trees…
this was a much better attempt! you can see andy’s face this time!

wabi sabi
today i went with laurie out to santa monica to visit my brother =) we got there towards the end of the farmer’s market and had some yummy quiche and just sat in the victorian watching him work and catching up on life. it was really neat just being able to hang out with the puen side of my family =) living out here in the IE i’ve been surrounded by the banaags, and i don’t normally like heading out to LA at all. but it was nice having a sunday just for them.
i was supposed to head back to loma to hang out with WOY but then my brother said i had to go to his restaurant and try his food. it’s technically not even his restaurant anymore, since he no longer works at wabi sabi, but they still serve the desserts that he created, so it was still cool. his pomegranate creme brulee was awesome! and i really hope he teaches me how to make that and also how to make the mushroom potstickers - i normally don’t eat anything mushroom, but this stuff was mmmm… so yummy!
i met my brother’s volleyball classmates mika, mariko, and kohei (but i’m not sure i’m spelling their names right...)
and we took a picture with laurie
and my brother finally came out of the restaurant to take a picture with us =) he knew everyone there and was catching up with all his friends - hostesses, waiters, bussers, and the sushi chefs… i think it’s cool that he knows everyone =) and it’s obvious that they all love him and want him to work there again. i’m glad i got to go with them and spend time with my family =)
