rod's 26th birthday

colleen, rod, rita, jason, marlene (and benjamin), kat, me, perry, gervase, jon, and jeff all got together at sayaka to celebrate rod’s 26th birthday.  we were s’posed to get together last week, but the boy went and bought himself tickets to the clippers playoff game and left us hanging, the brat!!  hahaha… but he got some good stuff (like free clippers shirts and the like) and the clippers are currently 3-1, so i’m good with that =)

anyways, our chef sonny was real good and made us laugh alot, and i’ll be posting videos of him sometime soon… but meanwhile, here are some photos of our night:

the best-picture award goes to perry, jon, and jason (who took the picture).  he had zoomed in while taking our picture and cut the rest of us out.

the picture was actually intened to photograph our whole side of the table like this:

rita and marlene

rod asked me and kat if we wanted to take a picture of him blowing out the candle, and then he did this silly pose, but didn’t actually blow out the candle.  and then, he laughed so hard at himself, that he “faked” us out, but his gasps of laughter blew out the candle!  hahaha… dorky, eh? =)

and here is the bike that we got for him.  he’s been hinting around at wanting a bike for a good amount of time now, so we all pitched in together and got him a gift that he actually wanted.  it was cute - he was riding it around the house immediately after i took this pic, and colleen, jon, and gervase stood on the sidewalk watching him like concerned parents.  it was very cute to see him so excited about the gift.

and here’s me and perry - by coinkidink we matched each other.... and we even matched the wall behind us!  ok.... so it’s smarmy cute, but hey, we took the pic, and i like it, so i’m posting it here.  =D

oh yeah… and happy birthday rod!

"making out in tagalog"

by renato perdon

so, i’ve been on this mission to learn tagalog.  yeah, i know, i’ve wanted to learn tagalog for quite a while, and every once in a while, i pick up a book or a language cd and i try to pick up some more phrases.

the most current book i’ve picked up, though, is pretty hilarious.  i mean, the phrases it teaches are funny to me already, but then when you look at the order they’re put in the book, you pretty much realize, “making out in tagalog” is designed to help you “make out” with tagalog-speakers… or do a whole heckuvalot more!

here’s a few exerpts:

“have you been drinking a lot?” kanina ka pa ba umiinom?
“well, drink some more!” kung ganoon, inom pa!

“i’ll take you home” ihahatid kita sa inyo
“do you want to come to my place?” nais mo bang pumunta sa aking tirahan?

“turn off the light” patayin mo ang ilaw
“is this your first time?” ito ba ang iyong una?
“i don’t want to have a baby.” ayaw kong magkaanak

and the best 2 lines in this series:

“i don’t like to wear a condom” ayaw kong gumamit ng kondom
“if you don’t wear a condom, i won’t do it” kung hindi ka gagamit ng kondom, ayaw kong gawin ito

the next chapter had me rolling on the floor

“will you marry me?” pakakasalan mo ba ako

was followed up with the classic:

“will you come to america with me?” sasama ka ba sa akin sa amerika?

and yet, it gave multiple reasons to not get married, including

“i have another boyfriend” mayroon akong iban kasintahan
and “i’m already married” ako ay kasal na

it ends with some tips on how to break up with each other, but in case he keeps on trying, you can always tell him:

“i’m going to change my phone number” magpapalit ako ng numero ng telepono

and if you enjoyed this book, you can get a variety of books with the same phrases.  they have this book available in chinese, korean, japanese, tagalog, indonesian, thai, and vietnamese.

can you say “asian fetish”?

kirstin and gabi are married!

kirstin and gabi had a most beautiful outdoor wedding…

the bayou-themed reception was just as beautiful, and one of the coolest parts was the getaway, where they handed out glowsticks so that we could line the getaway with ‘fireflies’ (click on the photo to see a larger version)

the whole thing was very beautiful… i’ll have more pictures and stories as the week goes by but i wanted to post these two right away.

congratulations, kiri & gabi!

so many thoughts...

i have a jumble of thoughts in my head, and i know they’re all inter-related, and so i’m assuming they are a string of thoughts… but where does this string start?  or is it a big tangle of similar but unrelated events?  how am i ever supposed to untangle this mess in my head?

who will help me talk it out?

i want to ride my bicycle

today was yet another field trip friday, and this time, i asked my seniors what they’d like to do for their field trip.  phil suggested a bike ride around redlands, and so we did it - west on barton to mountain view, north all the way to san bernardino ave, down the way till we hit alabama and from there we took a small break at citrus plaza, where we took this photo:

and then from there, we continued east on lugonia till we hit up texas, then cut back under the freeway.  i figured when we hit redlands blvd we’d turn left to go towards state street and cuca’s, but the girls were on one-speed beach cruisers, so they were too tired to do anything but turn right and head back home towards the school.

it definitely was a different field trip than any of the other ones i’ve been on this year, but i really enjoyed being out and about in the sun, enjoying the physical exercise, after which i was so plum tuckered out i came home and crashed in my bed.  i think i’d count this as another successful friday!

friday is a free day

today was “field trip day” but also a minimum day and there were tons of groups who needed to work on projects, so we ended up having “in-house field trips” which basically turned into the pe teacher playing sports outside with the students while i hosted ‘game day’ in my classroom, playing cranium, taboo, and catchphrase.  we played for 4 hours, and then everyone helped clean up and everyone went home.

instead of going home, i ended up taking the principal’s two daughters and another student to las brasas on state street in redlands, and then afterwards we walked over to the redlands mall to wait for sara’s mom to pick them all up.

and there, at “hobo’s" vintage store, we found these goodies:

at one point, sarah was like, i can’t believe we’re shopping with our math teacher!

and then these students showed up from the farm and they too were surprised to see me all dressed up…

i think my job rocks…

UPDATE:  so hobo’s vintage already put us up on their myspace!!!

how many words can you find?

last night we had tuesday night dinner and poker night.  so many people showed up this week!  it was really awesome… kat and jayson came over early to help me cook and kat made some ginger chicken and jayson sauteed the bakchoy with tomatoes and onions.  but what was really cool was that kat, rita, shelia, and marlene were all there, in addition to jayson, mark schatzschneider, gwyn, chad, chris, marc rolle, and ron.  it was the first large gathering in a long time…

at the end of dinner shelia and i thought it’d be fun to join forces and play boggle online as a team, trying to improve our score and possibly get first place.  in a few minutes it ended being the whole group crowded around my small 12” laptop with me at the helm, kat on my left, shelia on my right, chad, ron, marlene, and the rest behind me as i typed the words that people were shouting out at me.  our score improved and we were getting within the top 10 fairly often, but we never got first place....

later that night when perry showed up he ate a late dinner and i sat next to him, playing sudoku online while keeping him company.  we finished all the games for the day and then i opened up boggle again, and for our second game we broke 100!  i think we got 105 points and the winner had 110?  ok, so then the next time, our score was 66, and the winner was 69!  it was pretty impressive that perry could match the crowds of people around me =) he’s just so smart! =) yesh, he is… =)

anyways, we played a couple more games till we got this one:

i know, it’s a low score, but we got first place!  that’s the actual board that we got all our words on.

you get 1 point for 4-letter words
2 pts for 5-letter words
3 pts for 6-letter words
5 pts for 7-letter words
11 pts for 8-letter words and larger

how many can you get?

lazy "sun"day

today i spent the day in the sun, lounging on the front lawn at perry’s house… i took rocco outta his cage and chased him around the grass with my camera!

meanwhile, perry was fixing his bike… here, he’s already taken off the seat and the right exhaust…

and here is his bike butt naked - pretty much everything is off it!  by the end of the afternoon he had it all reassembled, ready, and roarin’ to go!

it was such a nice lazy day out there… his sister was there and she helped me clean my car (thanks gigi!) and his mom was out gardening too… i am certainly glad that springtime/summer is about to begin!

enjoying the sun

this ENTIRE spring break i’ve been longing to get away and get into the sun but it had been rainy and i didn’t end up getting far away at all.  today was nice though, and actually so warm that i felt like i was sweating in my car.  i took this opportunity to get out in the sun and i drove to bryn mawr school and walked way to the back and took a nap in the sun.  it was just so nice to be out there, and be warm!

so this picture is of the grass (no, not where i was lying down, but close to it.  i was actually on the part of the lawn that had been mowed) and the school in the background.  enjoying the glorious sun!

mt high w kat

i never thought i’d go boarding with kathy… every time i mentioned it to her, she always acted like she’d never ever wanna go boarding again!  but this time, i had some extra vouchers and i invited her to go and told her i’d stick with her the whole day making sure she’d get her confidence back again....

so here we are all excited and ready to go up the mountain… you can’t really tell but we’re wearing sweatshirts and jackets and by the end of the first run, we realize that we may have on too many layers of clothing… after a couple more runs, we decide to sit there and watch the jump contest they’re doing… and then we ended up signing up for the “dash for swag” contest, where they put a whole buncha free ‘swag’ on the top of the jump, they drew a line in the snow, and had us race UP the mountain for free shirts, sweatshirts, belts, etc…

the dude in charge promised me that there’d be enough swag for everyone who signed up, but the first, second, and third place winners thought that they deserved more than one prize for being the first up the hill that they grabbed all the stuff… i still made it up there, though, and was sorely disappointed while trying to suck air into my lungs.  geez, we already had gotten winded just walking up to the slopes, and then we ran up the snow in boots?  craziness!!!

when i got back down to where the main booth was, i pointed at the guy in charge and said, “you lied!! there was nothing for me up there!” and so he tossed me a mt high shirt.  kat was there too, so i said, “hey, she didn’t get one either!” and he tossed her one too…

so here we are in our mt high shirts:

we boarded like this for the rest o’ the day cuz it was that warm, and i made kat go over the jumps, and then by the end of the day she was actually jumping!  doing small stuff, but still… it was fun =) she even went thru the half-pipe and down a black diamond, so it was pretty awesome.

kat conquered the mountain!!

it was a good day… i even was able to do a 180! =) hahaha… good stuff =)

oh, and the best part (if you’re a nerd like me!) was that we saw darth vader there!  skiing down the mountain!  hell yeah!!!  check it out!

the sound of music, a la the family von Banaag

“there’s a sad sorta clanging in the clock in the hall, and the bells in the steeple too,
and up in the nursery an absurd little bird, is popping out to say ‘cuckoo’ “

CUCKOO!!
