being good and being nice aren't the same thing

nothing in my life is really prompting this topic, but for some reason it’s on my mind.

but basically, this is a conversation my friends had some time ago.  my friends (at least the ones i’m referencing right now) aren’t necessarily nice people, but they’re good people.

for example:  being a teacher, i’m trying to figure out how to do the right thing.  this doesn’t necessarily make me nice to the students - in fact, it most often makes me the “enemy” because i’m urging (or requiring) them to do something they’d rather not do.  but i figure it’s in their best interest and i’m trying to help them make the most out of their lives.  see… being good, but not being nice to them.

in fact, i would say nice is not that nice of a description.  you don’t really wanna be the nice guy, or the nice girl.  at least, i’ve heard guys say that they’re tired of being the “nice guy”.

so… i guess, being good and being nice aren’t the same thing.

there’s more to that thought, but it’ll have to wait till later.  i’ve just been thinking about the “right” thing to do and i haven’t quite put my finger on that one, but i’ve at least semi-defined or separated “good” from “nice”.... how do you think “right” figures into that?

while watching "how to make an american quilt"

“i think the hardest part about being a woman is having woman friends” she said.

to which winona ryder’s character responded, “i think the hardest part about being a woman is not being able to just be friends with a man”

yeah… “that’s true” she conceded

thanksgiving with friends...

for wednesday night dinner, we had thanksgiving potluck… there was a ton of food cuz ron brought lasagna, chad and julie brought 2 pies and multiple ice creams, laurie brought some wines, cookies, and green bean casserole, rod brought lambrusco, marlene brought chips and salsa, rita made gravy, and i made mashed potatoes, garlic bread, and i stuffed and baked a chicken in lieu of thanksgiving turkey =)
here’s ron carving my thanksgiving chicken

there were alotta people there - me, shelia, amanda, jayson, rita, jason, marlene, chad, ron, julie, laurie, kat, susan, rod, perry, and marc rolle

and they all stuffed their face =)

we played poker while the girls watched grey’s anatomy…

and then late at midnight we shot some baskets at terrace hills middle school… playing ‘ho’rse, golf, and a game of 2 on 2 afterwards

it was definitely a nice start to the thanksgiving holidays =)

little jaime

jordan is sure a cutie - and he’s probably the most well-behaved little boy i’ve ever seen… he just sat on my lap all happy like =)

of course, when the girls kidnapped him to switch him outta the bulls jersey into the laker gear, he wasn’t too happy…

some more photos

i’m trying to catch up on my lack of posts for the last few months… here’s some photos that go a few weeks back.

from glow the grove, here’s me working the cotton candy machine.  or… was it working me?

and of course, the balloon glow at night…

and a picture of my college buddies at alan’s wedding last weekend.  i didn’t get to take a pic of alan and esther but i grabbed this one right before i left.  i think the last time i saw all these guys together (was it 4166? hmm...) was at least more than 5 years ago.  man, it’s been awhile.  seems like everyone’s doing great too!

and the wedding cupcakes were apparently the best cupcakes ever.  i was recovering from a cold so i didn’t have a bite, but i heard they were the most delicious things ever!  wedding cupcakes… that’s the second wedding in a row to do it.  pretty neat concept, and definitely great design!

some pics of the family mini reunion

83 relatives showed up to the “mini” banaag reunion at uncle benny’s house in yucaipa a few sundays ago… i finally was able to take the pics off my camera, so here are a few:

perry holding jared (ate kris’s kid)

generation 2 - lola emilia’s kids - granda enchong is the oldest one alive (i think he’s the 3rd son or so...) and he’s about 93 or 94.  then comes gma luisa, gma pacing, and gpa osing (and his wife)

i don’t have a good all-inclusive pic of my mom’s generation… so moving on…

generation 4 - at least those of us who were early enough to take this pic!  a whole bunch showed up later

generation 5 - not too many of the next generation showed up but they ran around with a ton of energy!

ahhh… the shoes… can you tell this is a filipino gathering? =)

man it is GOOD to have my computer back!

i guess technically, i should say it’s good to have a new computer.  my little tiny one finally died from the daily use/abuse that i put it through - basically, i had it with me 24/7, at home, at school, anywhere else, and in my backpack especially, and sometimes it just wouldn’t hibernate when i closed it, etc, so that the screen finally died.  you could barely make out anything on that screen anymore, and plus, it had been dropped by a student, etc.  it’s actually a wonder to me that it didn’t die earlier.

at any rate, i’m back in the land of the internet with my brand new dell inspiron 1405.  it’s 2 inches larger than my last laptop and must i say it seems HUGE to me!  i sorta miss my tiny one but i wasn’t about to pay twice the price for a smaller computer, plus, this one has a lot going for it, so i’m trying it out.  i’m still trying to get all my settings correct - i downloaded firefox, found some decent tab extensions for it, got thunderbird, google talk, OpenOffice.  so that means i have a browser, a mail client, an office program (just like word, excel, powerpoint, etc, but it’s all free and legally free!).  i still have to get trillian (a chat program that integrates aim, yahoo instant messenger, msn messenger, and icq) and a few other things.

on that note, does anyone know how to uninstall msn messenger?  and get rid of all the other crap that these computers get preloaded with?  i’m trying to make my computer more efficient and get rid of all the programs i don’t want/need, like all those things that start up when i turn on my computer, or all the internet service provider ads built into my computer.  ugh… there’s so much work to be done here!

anyways, i was gonna say that i’m happy to have a computer of my own again… soon, it will be configured the way i want it to be, and i’ll be back, posting semi-regularly =) see you soon!
