It's always interesting to see how actually visits your sites. I remember for a while I was getting visitors from Turkey. Who was that? Why did they find my site? What were they looking for? The mystery remains...

internet ministry?
"The LORD is good,
a refuge in times of trouble.
He cares for those who trust in him... "
-- Nahum 1:7 --

for some reason barbara's verse of the day strikes a chord in my heart whenever i read it, more than any of the other devotional sites that i read. she has a real gift and quite a ministry. maybe i could do something like this some time.

i'm also excited about this Bible printing job that i dreamt up sometime ago, printing custom Bibles on demand. i wonder how long it would take for me to make that work if i devoted my time and energy to it. i wonder if i'd feel fulfilled by it. i wonder if what i would do with myself if i did it. *sigh* i've thought about stuff like this so long and it's about time i do something about it! especially now that i'm done with tuesday/wednesday nights, i'm looking for a ministry of some sort. hmmm, i guess i'll just have to wait till i feel called to do something. it's too bad inspiration doesn't come on-demand! oh, for patience...

I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate your verse of the day writeups. I haven't commented on them, but I do read them.

Please keep glimmering.com in your prayers. I really want to get that started up for all of us. Thanks!

behind our house
rita jumps the trampoline
rita and i took a walk on the day after thanksgiving and ended up turning on the dead end street next to our house. we had so much fun discovering this uncharted land, rita was like "i feel like we're 12 year old boys!" hahha! oh, for the good old days... =) when we were 12 year old... um... boys. ahh, but you know that we were both adventurous young'uns, and we relived some of it this past friday.

we chanced upon a field and found a private tennis court, a clubhouse, wooden ramps for bmx bikers, a few empty lots, an old car that reminds me of granny's car from looney tunes, and then this great trampoline. it was huge! rita had a lot of fun jumping and i had to capture the moment =) who knew all those treasures are hidden back there!

kat, kimi, & alan
kat left on sunday at midnight, so i just thought i'd post this picture from her trip here. it really was nice having her back, especially this week. it was a great excuse to round up everyone together and be surrounded by friends. between the two of us i'm sure we have tons of photos but this is a classic one of us taking our own pictures an arm's length away from our faces.

i can't wait till she comes back for Christmas break.

gym night rocks!
kimi & kat win all the trophies!
i made it to gym night last night, which would be my second time this year! hmmm... but hey, it was fun just running game after game after game. volleyballed it up with three modus dei groupies, and they were pa-retty cool. especially the girl named "y", pronounced "ee". after a couple of games (which we totally beat the guys - and i blocked yoshi, yay!), we switched over to basketball, but they tried putting us on separate teams, so we deferred back to volleyball to wait until we could be on the same team. =) just like back in the day when me and kat refused to guard each other. anyways, y was really cool cause she made sure we played together, she was nice 'n friendly, had an awesome shot, would drive it in to the basket, and she was cute too! she even made the game winning shot. i was looking around for a friend to introduce her to! =) yes, she was that cool... actually, i thought it was great to play with girls who were athletic -and- friendly, and i was just happy for the chance to play 3 rounds of volleyball and 2 games of basketball. *sigh*

since i don't have pictures of last night, i'll continue diving through the archives and post this picture from last year's basketball/volleyball tourney, which would be the second to the last time i made it into a gym. =) we still won first place in both categories... oh, the fun that was had that night. i can't wait to play again!

faith
Hebrews 11

i'm gonna start needing a verse of the day category instead of the photo of the day thing. i'm gonna have to focus on this instead, cuz i know i'd wake up in the morning and sit down and work on choosing/uploading/posting/writing about a photo. so now, i'll wake up, sit down, read the verse of the day, and then read a chapter in the Bible.

i'm not quite sure yet how i'm gonna do this, if i'm gonna read a chapter here, a chapter there. or maybe start at the beginning of a book and finish it, and go in order. hmmm... but at least i know i'm gonna cross the books off the list until i've read everything. i started to do that in ecuador and i came oh-so-close to finishing and i can't find the list - it got lost in the moves all around the dorms in la sierra. i keep on telling myself i'm gonna start again, so here i go!

starting off with hebrews 11. faith. God is reassuring me.

back in the days
kimi in mirror
ok, i'm back to posting pictures again, pulling from deep in the archives. i'm working on transferring all my photos from cd to hard drive (onto the beautiful 250 gig hard drive i got for my birthday - thanks!) and so now i'm running into all these old memories. this picture i took on my very first day with my very first digital camera. i was so excited to see all the different settings i could play with, and somehow i came up with this shot i took in the mirror using my fingers to block the flash from blinding everyone in the mirror. i love the bloody effect... and hey, since it was my first day, it brings back great memories.

this is the day it all began... relentless picture taking commenced!

Thanksgiving resolutions
"But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." -- 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 --

that's today's verse of the day. i'm gonna try and read the Bible every morning and spend quality time with God. find out His will for my life and do it. i really wanna reconnect with God and make this work between us. He's gonna have to help me out, but hey, His grace is sufficient for me, and when i am weak, He will make me strong.

i've known i needed to do this for a while now, but i guess sometimes it takes a kick in the butt to be able to make some changes in your life. and boy, what a kick in the butt i've had. y'know, i knew i needed to do this long time ago (keep close to God), and if i had kept Him as a priority, i wouldn't have to give up other things now. but that's ok, God IS my priority, and He'll help me through this. and a renewed relationship with Him is better than anything else in this world.

Lord, help me to keep you first in my life.

kimi tries to stuff spaghetti into max's smiling face
max came back from spain on monday! yay! after a whole buncha shuffling around on airlines, re-routing, etc, i finally was able to pick him up at lax and come back home, where we ate lumpia and spaghetti with all the folks here at game night.

i, of course, being the filipino hostess, had to make sure that max had enough to eat. at least he seems to be enjoying it =)

his spanish hasn't improved any but i found out he stayed at a hotel that helped him in russian. i guess that's what europe is all about, huh? everyone speaks everything. he even stayed at another hotel speaking french. yup, french, spanish, russian, and english... what a traveler, huh?

scene at a wedding

okay, i know that this picture was on the wedding page, but i think it deserves a little spotlight. this is the handiwork (haha! what an unintended pun) of kevin, jayson, and jeff. you know how when you go to weddings and at the reception, there's a disposable camera on each table? you're supposed to take pictures of people at your table for added memories of the bride and groom.

these three guys make a li'l photoshoot of it, and let me just say, they're hilarious! wacky and weird, yes, but still, hilarious. this particular picture is of these three "reenacting" the wedding scene, complete with altar and wedding dress train, the flowers that lined the aisle, and pastor.

they also taped the table number to jayson's vest and he pretended to be shooting and kev was blocking his shot. jeff had rose petals for eyes and his mouth. jay swallowed his chopstick like a flame eater. each shot gets better than the one prior.

i'd love to see nercy and nelson's face when they develop that roll of film =)

bridget jones diary - part 2
saw this movie last wednesday, right after we all went out to eat at the spaghetti facctory. let me just start off by saying how much i love watching a movie with rita - it's great cuz she laughs when i do... it might not be so fun for everyone else at the theatre.. =/ oh well, we enjoy our 9 bucks worth =)

okay, on to what i thought of this movie... well, it certainly was the edge of reason. it just seemed like all the predicaments were a bit far-fetched and just a bit contrived. the story line was quite, how do you say, unbelievable. =) which is ok for a comedy, i suppose. it's just that the first bridget jones move had that quality that made her so accessible to everyone - they even made her gain weight and made her look like a typical girl instead of the anorexic skeleton that she is. but really, the brilliance of the first movie was that she was every girl, just wanting to find that special someone and choosing the cad instead. they tried to put that into this new movie, but didn't bother to make it relatable, because now she's this tv journalist who gets to travel all over, and experience crazy adventures in far away lands.

don't get me wrong, it's definitely entertaining. it's just a different genre. yet, for a comedy, it did its job - it kept me laughing the whole time throughout. classic gags and more, we laughed at all her crazy escapades. plus, i'm sure that there will be classics for us to quote. =) hahah.... just thinking about it is making me laugh now =)

i really enjoyed watching "big-shit" jones, maybe you will too!

wannabe dad
careful, lillibeth, ryan (felcar) might take your baby!
tonight was great. or, last night was great... i was supposed to go to dinner with eric on wednesday night and then out with ching on thursday night, but her schedule changed so then we were gonna go out the three of us. and then eric was gonna bring ryan. and then rafa was gonna come along. and then rita wanted to watch bridget jones diary so we all decided to do that after dinner. and then brad was gonna come along. and then shelia came home before we left and joined us. tiffany met us at the restaurant too, so then we had a nice big dinner party for 9 at ol' spaghetti factory. yum, creamy pesto dressing...

anyways, that's another story for another day. the whole reason i'm bringing this up is cause halfway through our meal i looked up and saw lillibeth walking in with milt and their baby. !!!! wow, that surprised me. it was my first time seeing her, so cute at 3 months old. =) ryan and i were checkin' out the li'l girl and i heard him coo, "oohhh, i wanna get me one of these"

so cute. so very very cute.

go for broke

i'm sitting here in my "history of educational policy" class (yah, it sounds like a winner, huh?) and for the last class reading ever (of the maaaannny that we've done) was finally on asian-americans in public education. yup, we actually warranted a full article! it was pretty interesting, although, y'know, my attention span in class isn't that great. we took notes on the chinese americans in schools and the japanese americans in school, and the interment on the west coast.

well, right now we just finished watching a movie on the treatment of japanese during world war ii, and the amazing thing is that this movie was made by an 8th grader for a history project. it's so good! it actually reminds me of kathy, who made a website for "go for broke" that commemorated the stories of the japanese in the u.s. army (did i get that right? i think i'm close...) yah, i was thinking that this girl was gonna grow up to be like kat, making cool projects for cool organizations that make cool educational materials for all of us peoples to watch. thanks to people like them, i can actually enjoy class and learn at the same time! =) no, just kidding, but seriously, mad props to this 8th grade girl who made this movie that ended up going national.

the ken monster
ken towers over my frightened taiwan students
back in taiwan, when i was teaching english there, we'd do a photo scavenger hunt with our students, and then we'd use the photos for the slide show at the end. it was really fun, and we ran around the school making photos like this. i have absolutely no idea what the requirements are for this picture, but i remember having a great time doing it! straight up camera tricks, cuz we were running around with a disposable camera. oh yah, i remember, the director made us do this and then developed all the film (which delivers the photos in mini photo albums) and then it was a gift to each teacher to be able to take home. isn't that sweet of him?

as for ken, i wonder how he's doing... he was a spanish major, which i thought was really funny at the time. i actually bought him a spanish-english Bible and sent it back to taiwan for him, to thank him for being a good TA for me while we were there in kaoshung. hmm... hope everything is going well for that group over there. i miss valen!! maybe i should call her...

detention sucks
the students hate detention, i hate detention, detention sucks all around! i'm here stuck with these students and they're stuck here with me. i have to give them busywork and make sure that they stay quiet and be properly 'detained' and that just takes an hour out of my busy schedule to sit here and monitor busywork. so i'm here posting an entry instead of at home, writing my paper that's due tonight. how inefficient can this time get?

meanwhile, i also have students who are here voluntarily - gabby, emelin, priscilla, annel, cindy, and breanna - because they wanna do their work and be here for my help. i feel so sorry for them because it's horrid for them here. it's horrid for me here! at least they're a joy to have around. any student who voluntarily suffers through detention to get some schoolwork done gets mad props from me. if only i could do something for them so it wasn't such torture...

braiding my hair

they asked if they could braid my hair. since it was lunchtime, i figured it'd be ok...

man, the students crack me up! they were touching my hair and saying how nice, smooth, straight, etc, it was. i thought they were kissin' up to me and then they said "black people have nappy hair" and i almost busted up laughing in their face, it was just really cute. they really do like my hair.

they weren't all that successful braiding my hair, and they blamed that on the lack of a comb to separate my hair. so then they just thought, hey, let's do two large braids on each side (y'know, like mary ann braids), and make the teacher look like she's 12! yup, here are their exact words: "it'll be so cute, teacher'll look like she's 12!"

what?! 12?!?! *sigh*

i went to the school nurse yesterday, sans braids, because i had to check up on the status of a student. i even told her, "i'm here to check up on one of my students." she took one look at me, all dressed up in a button down shirt, creased pants, dress shoes, and black jacket, and said, "are you his classmate?" i was like, "NO, HE'S MY STUDENT!", but of course, nicer than that. do i really look 12? i doubted it, but now it seems like a schoolwide conspiracy to make me look younger every day.

so now, when they tell my i look young, and especially when they say i look like one of them, i tell them i am. i say, "you're right, i'm your age, but i paid attention in school so now they pay me teach all of you what i learned last year." yah, that shuts them up quick =)

i don't teach, i inspire!

here's a picture of my whiteboard -after- i lectured the students! they actually like the discipline... not all the time, usually, they run outta the classroom as fast as possible, but they also stay afterwards and talk to me during lunchtime, etc. moments like these get me through the hard times when they're hatin' on me.

oh, and chauncey lee, his signature at the bottom... the same one that i had that talk with some time ago. after the incident, chauncey came into my classroom and asked me how i was doing. i had no idea what he was talking about so i just said i was fine and that he needed to sit down and start working. but he just kept on asking, and then told me he wanted to make sure that none of those students hurt me, because he heard that a student pushed me. both chauncey and raul said "we just wanna make sure you're ok, miss puen"

*sniff sniff* =)

happy birthday, sherry girl!
kimi & rita all decked out to sing to sherry girl
"sheeeeeeee.....eeeerryy, sherry baby. shee-eery, won't you come out tonight!"
for sherry girl's big five-0 case management went to hawaiian barbecue last night to sing happy birthday and make her a music video. mo brought the props, and we sang "sherry" and "a moment like this" and "achy breaky heart" all git' up with feather boas, elvira wigs, and top hats. i hope she likes it =)

thank you jeff for singing "summer nights" with me! you're awesome...

and rita, you rock! you sing wonderful... she'll love your solo!

my favorite was the a capella song - it was just a great night of singing. thank you!

9-year-old eminem fan
ashley & snowball cuddle on the sidewalk
here's ashley. always wanting to be center of attention, she immediately jumped into the picture i was taking of her dog. but, the more interesting thing about ashley, at least recently, is that i saw here practicing a dance routine out on the lawn.

i guess it's not that out of the ordinary for me to see the kids dancing on the lawn, but this particular day i thought i'd see what was up, watch the routine, and of course, take pictures. she starts with this dramatic arm flair as i hear eminem flow through the speakers. now, i'm an eminem fan (and i just found out that his new cd is coming out this friday - yay!!!), but i was a bit surprised to hear his rap as her background music... what kind of dance studio uses his language to teach the youth of today!!!!! i was appalled, but i found out from ashley that she chose the song on her own and made up a routine just for the fun of it, nothing to do with the studio. *phew* takes a load off my mind!

but keep in mind, these are the same feral children who barraged our house during the summer, sitting in our living room and surprising us by saying, "oh my gosh, becky, look at her butt!" and then proceeding to rap the entire lyrics to 'baby got back'. yah, these kids are definitely not innocent.

at least she looks cute in the picture. and snowball's adorable too.

It's good to hear that the feral children are still doing their thing. They look so innocent in pictures! Ah, but we know better.

Did they ever end up paying Rita back for her shoe? Or washing cars like they promised? Or are they still hanging around looking for cash handouts? Just wondering where all of that went.

up your arsenal!
ratchet and clank: up your arsenal went on sale yesterday. i'm so proud of those guys! they've been getting awesome reviews, and even are #2 on the all time top 20 list!

i can't wait to play this game, i've been hearing about it all year long and i'll finally get a chance to play it. the thing i like about rc3 this year is that you can play multi-player, so i don't have to play all alone. i know, that's silly, but hey, i wanna spend time with my gamer boyfriend who made the game, not spend time with the game and ignore him.

anyways, here's a screenshot of multiplayer mode. notice the different skins you can use - you can play as a snowman! lotsa other features too, but you'll just have to buy the game and see for yourself! =)

yay for all the insomniacs who made this awesome game!

Yeah, everyone here is super excited about the response to the game. We have tons of fans talking about it on our forums (www.insomniacgames.com) and the 10/10 reviews have been great to see. The game's only been available in stores for a day and already we have hundreds of people playing online blasting each other to bits. The online thing is a blast because we actually get to go online ourselves, play against our fans and show them all of the tricks. Nice to know first hand that people are having this much fun with our labor of love.

prayer please
would you please pray for my mom? she's in the hospital right now... they think it was a heart attack or that she's still having one (i don't know how that works) but basically she has chest pain and she's hooked up to an ekg monitor and it's running abnormal, so they're monitoring her in DOU.

i guess the shock must have just set in because i'm just starting to feel the stress settle in, when she called me about an hour ago it was more of a surprise but it hadn't hit me yet. now, i'm just sad... and worried and wondering. i know God is taking care of her and everything will work out, but i guess i just wanna know now what is going on. pretty impatient of me, huh?

oh, and while you're praying, could you send up a prayer for me? i'm feeling really stressed out and i'd have burned out long time ago if it weren't for the wonderful Sabbath-day-of-no-work. everything is weighing heavily on me recently and i need to start letting things go so i can survive.

i really appreciate your prayers.

oh, and if you want to contact my mom you can call her at the white memorial medical center, she's in DOU, room 2318. the number is 323.268.5000.

thank you!

well, my mom is back home and out of the hospital - turns out it wasn't a heart attack but it was heart spasms. they say it's not as serious, so they just changed her medication to stop it. i guess she got used to the old one so it wasn't effective? i dunno...

i'm not sure how much concern spasms are supposed to cause, but hopefully everything they did made everything better. she's home and gallivanting around town as usual, so... God answers prayers =)

GO OUT AND VOTE!
never before have i been so involved in an election. and it's not like i'm doing anything about it at all, because i'm not very involved politically... *sigh* it's just how i am. seriously, this is probably the only political post i'll ever post, besides the poll on the right...

i do know, though, that voting is something that is a privilege and a right granted by the great US of A. and it is something that wasn't always available for someone like me - if we didn't count age in most of the previous elections, i would also have been disqualified on account of being a woman, being a minority, not being a property owner, etc, etc, etc... basically, noone wanted my opinion to count, but many other people have fought for my voice to be heard.

so hear it they shall!

let's all participate and vote. i mean, the future of our country and the future of people not in our country depends on the decision made today. why should people affected by our foreign policies and "national security" not be allowed to say what they want to happen? and then here we are in the states with a voice to be heard and not doing anything about it.... *sigh* it makes me sad. so i'm gonna drive myself over to the polls as soon as i get outta work and throw my votes in with everyone else who wants to participate in our democracy.

and so should you!

punk ass!
my student pushed me today. he was pissed that he had to stay for detention, even though he willingly signed the detention slip last week... and his punk classmates riled him up and teased him about being scared of me when i made him sit down so he pushed through me to the door. yes, HE PUSHED ME. i told him to back off and that's why he sat down in the first place, and then all the guys were laughing and saying "look how scared he is of her!" and then he got pissed off and pushed me and ran away.

there's frickin' no way he's gonna be able to get away with pushing me and bullying my students, telling them that they'd better not obey me and undermining my authority. seriously!!! i asked one of my 7th grade students to pick up the phone and call security and when he stood up all the 8th grade students bullied him into sitting back down and not doing it "cuz they're homies and they stick together"

so the vp called me into the office and gave a form i need to fill out and sign and they're expelling him from our school. he gets a 5 day suspension and then hopefully the appeal goes through and he's out. that's right, HE'S OUT!!! going to the correctional school. how dare he push me!!! after the principal took all the students out of my detention and gave them to another teacher i just sat there shaking and crying... what the hell is wrong with these kids!!!! i'm SOOOO MADDD!!!

i need ice cream and purple chips. =(

Ay, pobrecita, la KP....
What did I tell you about keeping a stick in front of the classroom with dried/crusted blood on it, dents in it, and possibly some hair sticking to it for effect??
This is what these li'l monsters (I mean that in a holloweeny kinda way) NEED to shape up. Violence respects violence.
Tell 'em you weren't planning to take the ol' "billy club" out of retirement (named after one of your former unruly students, "Billy") , but extreme situations call for extreme measures.
Talk to it. Ask it, "Is it time?", "Is it time now?", "Do you want to meet them now?", whenever one of your little hellions acts up.
Remember: If you're gonna leave a mark, make sure there are no witnesses, and if you're gonna leave a witness,....don't.
Nevermind.
What am I thinking?
....wait, where am I?

It's hard 'cause you can't touch them. Of course, in our angry we can get out of hand too. I thought of all the things I would have done to that child, and I know that the next day I would be out looking for another line of work. I'm proud of you for not doing anything rash.

Next time, find a way to get him out of that situation. I mean, in which he is pressured by his peers. It looked like he was very obedient until his "homies" started getting into it. If somehow he can be removed from that peer pressure, then maybe not the group, but that child can be... I dunno, redeemed?

Are you ok? Are you harmed in any way? Pyschologically? Emotionally? Just making sure you're ok. The fact is that little lame punks who have no backbone of their own are going to have to act out "rebellion" according to their peer group.

Maybe next time you should tie up his friends who were giving him a hard time, drag them off campus and have your friends "take care" of them. Then you can ask detention kid if he wants to join them. If not, you can stay in detention. If not, join your friends.

That only works in Japanese anime series. :( Booo, why aren't there real solutions out there?

it's really funny because every time we sang happy birthday to her, she'd start crying. seriously, she's waterworks! when she's happy, she cries, when she's sad, she cries. when she talks to me, she cries and tells me that God loves me and i should love Him back. it's a guilt-trip and heart-warming all at the same time. yesterday, on her birthday, she musta cried at least 5 times in front of me. it goes like this:

"hi grandma!"

*sniff sniff* *sob* i love you (with a tear in her eye)

it was wonderful! i'm glad i got to see my grandma and celebrate with her. or at least celebrate around her. =) and all my little nephews and nieces running around are always fun to visit. this week i'll be posting photos from the party as the pics of the day, and pointing out relatives, partially for me to remember their names as well! so many people...

happy birthday, grandma!

oh, it's the coffee of coffees

taiwan apparently is a big producer of brazil coffee, you can tell by reading the can! and just in case you have trouble reading the can, let me tell you what it says... and i quote:

Brazil Coffee
The Coffee of Coffees

I'll love you dear, I'll love you till China and Africa meet
And the river jumps over the mountain
And the salmon sings in the street.
I'll love you till the ocean is folded and hung up to dry
And the seven stars go squawking
Like geese about in the sky.

mmmm...Coffee.

'ahem...'

I love you, coffee.
Warm, how me likes,
I seek thee to
pour down these pipes.

I use you, yes, to
stay coherent,
and wake from sleep this
day old spirit.

At times I muddy
you with scones,
or mix you, something
new at home.

To get you, fast is
how I drive,
if not, I'd be knocked
out by five.

It's true, I do
rely on thee
to get me through
the ride all week.

And were you not here
now? It's true...
It'd chase me back to
Mountain Dew.

So, coffee, I
shall share tomorrow,
a venti iced
Americano,

and add white mocha
pumps, to boot,
AND TOAST, "TO LIFE!",
(and once to you).

only 3 days till halloween
haha! you thought i can't count, huh? well, even though halloween is 9 days away still, we're celebrating it here in only 3 school days. halloween falls on the weekend, there's no school next friday (yay!!) and a school dance on thursday (and no costumes allowed so we know which kid is doing what...) so i have to come up with a costume by wednesday. which leaves me pondering what i am going to do.

please please please!!! i need suggestions!!! something simple, easy, preferably inexpensive, and yet still appropriate for school dress code. and i have to be able to move about my room still. so many stipulations, i know, which is why i need your help.

what do you think i should dress up as?

I think you need to dress up as an old school teacher: frumpy dress, gray hair, horn rimmed glasses, and a yard stick to beat the kids with. They way you can act all scary and strict and claim that you're just getting into the Halloween spirit :o)

a bird in a bush! or a palm tree, to be exact. this one is nesting in the palm tree in the middle of a hotel, and the only reason i saw it was because the male one kept on flying back to help the mommy bird... she was eyeing me warily but i did them no harm. just a few pics...

a rain update
okay, well, i know that us so-cal folks are infamous for not putting up with tons of rain, and jimbo is right, i haven't dealt with a hurricane.

but the final tally was 8 inches of rain yesterday morning, at least in my area. l.a. got a measly 2 inches, and in mount baldy more'n 10 inches ran down the mountains. and it all fell roughly around midnight till when i was driving into work. our dry parched land obviously doesn't know what to do with that much water. it was plenny 'nuff rain to shut down a fuel pipeline and derail a train and kill at least 3. so i would say it was pretty dangerous. it also dumped 3 feet of snow in some areas so i guess the snowbunnies are pretty happy.

it's just crazy how the weather can be so strong and unstoppable and do so much damage...

at the very least i can thank God that it was limited to those 8 hours yesterday and that today was relatively clear. nasty clouds are on the horizon but they lay dormant today, hopefully they'll pass over and not do any damage this time 'round.

wow, that is a lot of rain. I think our hurricanes only dropped 5 or 6 inches a piece. And, the ground here s so flat and porous the water doesn't stick around long enough to do too much damage.

blame it on the rain
today, i thought i would drive to work. instead, i rowed my scion-shaped canoe through some recently created lakes, as of last night. i'm telling you, the roads were closed on the way to my school due to flooding... at one point i actually considered turning off my engine and just floating my way down the street, but instead, i let the motor run and sprayed my way through that half mile.

is it weird that driving 5-10 miles an hour on streets in san bernardino county can cause a spray taller than my car? or maybe i'm being delusional and that is standard october weather. but i could swear that last week or two was still pretty warm...

whatever the case, i know that i'm a wimp because i'm huddled at my computer desk with my undershirt, turtleneck, and hooded jacket, in the relative warmth of my house, freezing my toes off. whatever made me think i could move away from southern california?!! i mean, just the thought of visiting any other part of the country that is slightly colder/wetter than this terrorizes me to my very bone, i'd never survive it there! i'm a filipino! i live in southern california!! i spent a year living in ecuador where the temperature was normally 40C (about 105F) and we'd wear sweaters (read: long sleeve shirts) if the weather ever dropped down to 30C (about 85F)!!!

i'm not built for this, i'm more like a bear - i'd rather sleep through the cold. and i'd like to start my winter hibernation pretty soon. tonight would be nice so i wouldn't have to write my paper for tomorrow.

is that too much to ask?

I do miss the flooding, actually. We had great flooding in Northern California just about every year. Not just your "Ack! I'm Southern California and don't know where to put an inch of rain!" But honest to goodness ground-swelling buckets of water. I think that flood news is the most interesting stuff to watch on TV.

It doesn't seem to rain that much in Nebraska, at least not in the fall. The rainy season here is in the summer, which has my brain turned upside down.

Yeah, I'm gradually training myself -not- to crop when I shoot, so I have more flexibility later in photoshop. It's HARD to break the habit, but with the resolution on my camera, I can get 2 or 3 totally different shots out of one image just because it's so huge. (did that make sense? Bedtime...)

they promised that we'd be up and connected before school started... when school started they said it'd take 2 weeks.

and then 2 weeks more.

and then 2 weeks more.

and then...

well, you get the picture. but today, oh joy of joys, TODAY was the day. actually, it must have been yesterday, but today was the first day that i walked into my room and embraced the yellow cord running from my computer to the 8 ethernet jacks in the wall. yes, that's right, count 'em, there's 8!! which means there's ample space for me to bring my laptop and connect it here, and room for more computers! so now i'm posting this victory post from the comforts of my classroom, no longer having to walk to the library, no more enduring smelly students (or computer guys!) who inhabit the lab there. how WONDERFUL to have my very own computer! how EXCITING to have my very own connection! i could dance around the school but then my students would stare, so i'll just say:

"ain't life wonderful?"

the teaching gap
i just finished reading the first three chapters of the teaching gap (by James W. Stigler, James Hiebert) and i love it! it compares teaching styles in the US to those in Germany and Japan. and the "gap" it refers to is how far behind the US is... the authors totally pinpointed the problems and accurately described my classroom and i'd love to learn how to make my teaching more effective like the Japanese, so i suppose i'll finish this book.

it's the first one i've read this year for my classes (and it's my third week in school... my, i'm behind!) and the first report that i've written.

and now, at 1 in the morning, i will try to catch up on sleep.

when am i supposed to lesson plan for tomorrow?!?!??!?!

well, ramone, you should read the book! but it's mostly talking about math and science teaching methods - the japanese style of teaching allows students to discover the concepts and they learn everything deeper, while the typical american school teaches students the formulas for a wide variety of things between 5-8th grade, but they don't learn any depth.

basicallly, you try to teach them something in 8th grade, they're frustrated cuz it's the fourth year they're learning it, but there's not mastery of the concept because the curriculum only allows for 1 day on that topic. it's definitely worse here compared to other places, we're far behind on all the tests...

Yes! You're right! Not only that, but I think I should've taken math here in Japan! (I hate math) No, really. My comment before was bad... as far as *language* goes, in the school systems here they use the old grammar-translation method, and the only aim is to prepare students for the college entrance exam. I.e., the atrocity. BUT (and now I remove the hoof from my mouth) the world of math is something else entirely, as my wife informed me (and that she got through by sleeping through classes would mean that her sleeping math education was still superior... maybe if I go sleep through some lessons here the osmosis effect will kick in, too). Anyway, it's truly something advanced, which I know next to nothing about... I hope my hoof didn't step on anyone, sorry (>_<). I suppose the system works really well with things where there is one right answer. But in dialogue situations and discussion, though, things crave a Dead Poets Society of sorts. On that note, carpe diem and have a good day! (^_^)

you have 3 more minutes
Yesterday in class we talked about classroom management for a few minutes. Ms. Spencer said that she never gives the class enough time to finish their work so that you always keep them busy. That way, they don’t lollygag. And then you can be the nice person who will “gift” them a few minutes of extra time if and when they aren’t finished.

I tried that method today and told them that it will be this way from now on, and that they need to get their act together to start off the classroom. Some students hadn’t even started the assignment at the end of 5 minutes but that is no reason to give the whole class 5 more minutes, especially when the students who participate are just confined to sitting at their desk waiting for the other students to catch up. The students complained and it was very hard not to give in to that but I stuck to my word and enforced the “working environment.” However, I think that my classroom will possibly start performing better now that they know I won’t wait for them to talk for 5 minutes, now that they know I will, and I repeat, I WILL, leave them behind when they waste my class time.

I really sincerely hope that this helps them calm down, helps them stop interrupting my classroom, and that they will stop being a problem and start doing their work at the proper time, so that I don’t have to leave them behind. But I will not compromise the other students’ education while waiting for papers to get on desks.

And hopefully my classroom management will improve.

have i said yet how much i love Sabbath?
a day of rest, relaxation, and napping.

yes, i have become my childhood Sabbath nightmare - the Sabbath nap has taken over! what was once the bane of my childhood Sabbaths has now become the staple that makes it so wonderful!

when i was young, there was no fun to be had, no noise to be made. we had to play oh-so-quietly with our Bible games and make sure not to wake up the hordes of relatives that had set up camp in my aunt's living room. sleeping bags and blankets covered the entire first floor of this apartment, with grandma and grandpa taking the prime spots on the couches, while 5 pairs of aunts and uncles snored the afternoon away. all their children, my cousins who should have saved me from the weekend drudgery, were all older than me, old enough to drive themselves to some fun activity away from the snoring elders, while my brother and i were confined to the dining room, reading and *gasp* -oh no- talking! while suffering from the constant shushing from my aunts and uncles. to add insult to injury, we knew that when they woke up we wouldn't be able to play because we'd have to have sundown worship, even if they woke up after sundown! ahh, the precious minutes of play wasted waiting for that last uncle to open his sleepy eyes...

and now, at the tender young age of 25, i join the ranks of my aunts and uncles and will lie down for my Sabbath nap...

*yawn*

and i've been waiting for it all week!

solved my "pot problem"
yes, i had a 'pot problem'.

no, i did not have a problem with pot. but, our house did have a problem with pots... too many pots and pans! if you have been to our gt bachelorette pad, you know what i'm talking about. pots and skillets and double boilers and everything all over the place, all of which couldn't fit into what should've been more-than-ample space under our stove - basically we have storage the size of a large oven and still couldn't keep everything even when stacking creatively. basically we had two full kitchens move in together when our roommates got together, and we're stuffing all of it in one small space...

my other problem was that when i visited max, i didn't have ample materials to cook in. we'd have to do one dish at a time if we wanted to use a saucepan... but we could grill many items on the x-large skillet he has.

my solution? 'rescue' my pots 'n pans from my house and loan 'em to max - that way i can cook with ample cooking materials when i'm there at his place. plus, then he can cook for me more efficiently. and yes, he is a wonderful and creative cook who even tried to cook tofu for me. =)

y'all know what a wonderful rescue that is! hahha!!! yes, you know what i'm talking about... wonderfully clean pots in max's house! the wonder! the joy! being able to use my pots! what happiness...

prayer please
*sigh*

i need prayer. life is hard.

i'm struggling to prepare for my classes - i have 5 different ones but the most i ever get to prepare for is 3, and i just teach my non-english speaking kids the same, i feel so bad for them! add on top of that i have class every night at ucr. i haven't done any homework for them at all! in fact, class just started last week and i'm already falling behind.

i just don't know how i'm gonna survive this quarter (what's up with 25 units?! my teaching counts as 10 units but that's still 15 units spread out among 5 classes that meet each week... bleah!!!) - i'm barely teaching well enough, getting so little sleep that i'm falling asleep in my own class (and i'm the teacher!), and needing to do homework of my own on top of grading that needs to be done. i don't eat nearly as good as i should, and i'm just plain worried 'bout my life. i brought a Bible to school so it'll be there for me to read in the mornings when i get to school, but i never get to school in time to read it, so that's sorta how my days are going.

i just need prayer and a jumpstart in my walk with God... i know He can make this all better and even make me good at handling everything life is throwing at me right now... and i'd really appreciate any prayers you guys are saying on my behalf. i really need 'em =)

Kimi,
Just remember to breathe and keep you in mind. You can't do it all. Just pick the highest priorities first and you chip away at them little by little. You'll get through your classes with a bit less reading and a little more wingin' it. You're spanish speaking kids will still benefit from what you teach "everyone". You are just brand new and getting your legs...Cut yourself a lot of slack. I am sending prayers and love your way.

Jesus, bless Kimi with rest and peace in her heart so she can have a little clarity about what to tackle first. We totally know that you brought her this far, into her teaching career and everything. You've made it so obvious that this is because of you, Lord. So keep on moving in her life. Help her with her studies and with her students. Give her extra restful sleep for the hours that she does get. Help the roommates and Max to help her and support her.

Amen!

lost my pictures...
aarrggghhh..... one problem after another with photo hosts. perhaps you're wondering why you can't see any of my pics. well... photobucket went down. here's the official message:

Albums lost...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately Photobucket.com has suffered a catastrophic raid failure. This morning the same array that had been giving us problems earlier, crashed. We use Raid 5 on everything but the logical volume was corrupt and unrecoverable. We are rebuilding the disk now and then will recreate all of the albums which should be done late tonite. You will need to re-upload your pictures. If you had a paid account, we will refund your money or add 3 months to your subscription end date, whichever you prefer. This is a sad day for all of us here at Photobucket.com. The albums effected were V's v465-v499. We are truly sorry to those that lost their albums.

The Photobucket Team
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i am volume #478. i am one of the pitiful 35 people who were affected by this madness. only 35 people lost photos but i'm one of them. *sigh* and i spent so much time uploading and linking and now i have to do it again... pooh!

my first "teaching moment"
chauncey lee.

i've always liked him as a person because he's just so happy and giggly... but unfortunately, that makes for a very bad student who is *always* disrupting the classroom. 6th period has been a struggle trying to get him and his classmates to spend some time learning. chauncey blames his classmates (like most 7th graders), saying "he made me laugh", or in the case of other not so happy students, "he made me hit him!" i'm trying to get them to take responsibility for their actions, and emphasizing that they are the ones in control - other people don't make their choices.

i've even resorted to cheesy dramatic quips such as "your education is a gift that the state gives you for free - don't throw it away!" and "don't let anyone get in between you and your education." max was telling me those sound uber-dramatic and probably wouldn't do anything for a middle school class.

well, today chauncey surprised me - he didn't come to class prepared because he lost his notebook, and his replacement notebook was entirely blank so he didn't want to write in it until i gave him all the appropriate handouts that are supposed to be kept in it. i handed him those papers and continued with my lessons and examples - but he missed it on account of assembling his notebook. when i told the students to start their assignment to see if they understood it, chauncey walked up to me and asked me in a low voice if he could talk to me after class, during lunch. surprise me?! that's my role! i'm the one who tells 'em they need to stay till their work is done. hahah... i of course agreed to talk with him after class.

after all his classmates left he was still in his seat working quietly. i walked up to him and asked what he wanted to talk about...

"miss puen, i don't understand the work and i want you to show me how because i really really want to do this and i don't want to fail and i wanna learn this cuz i like math"

awww... if he didn't mean it, he sho' knows how to suck up because that won me over right there - i woulda spent my whole lunch period helping him understand. thankfully it didn't take that long but i'm still impressed that he came to me on his own, asked me to help him, and was willing to give up 10 minutes of his own lunch time so that he could do homework. dubious me, i asked the other teachers if they got him in trouble today (that usually gets him going) but they said no, nothing in particular happened today, but that i needed to remember this moment and file it under 'teacher moments' to inspire me when i get discouraged.

so, here it is, filed under teaching moment. bask in my glow...

does this make me a bad teacher?
i feel like a sleaze bag. i'm taking money from my students!!!!

it started out with me having snacks to eat during nutrition. some peanut butter bars, maybe an apple, etc. but now my students like hanging out in my classroom during that 10 minute break before 4th period, (hanging out with the teacher not during class? they -must- like me...) and they wanna eat my food too!!! they started offering to buy crackers off me for 25 cents each package, so i agreed. after all, i have 50 boxes of these things at home! i'm addicted to these things...

now, i have starburst, peppermint candies, and mini heath bars - these are rewards for the first person done with homework during classtime, and other similar situations. but the students are offering me 25 cents for any and every thing i have in my cupboard. today, i sold 16 packages - we're talking the small, 2 starburst in a small bag, halloween candy size packages - for $0.25 each, and i made a quick 4 bucks!

i feel so bad about taking their money that i'm now putting it all into a jar for petty cash funds - to either buy more candies or classroom supplies - like when i have to buy more dry-erase markers for the white board, or buy some rewards for the students...

hopefully that'll ease the guilt from knowing that they're wasting their money on candy.

and this weekend i'm gonna hit up smart 'n final and stock up on now'n laters and other goodies!! =)

does this just make me a good math teacher? or the worst teacher?

Naw its cool, as long as you use the money for class related stuff. Now if you start selling your students amway, or time stare property, or getting them into some pyramid scheme, then maybe there's a problem :o) ...unless they buy it....then we maybe we can work something out.

hey kat,
i'm not sure about the header banner, but i'll see what type of options i have. it's a good idea but it's not something that i can just choose - i'd have to write it all myself! so it won't be right now, but i'm looking it up.

as to the categories, i put a drop down menu (thanks to pulling code off of dooce!!) on the sidebar, but you can always select the yellow category at the end of each post to see more of that particular category.

thanks for the input. any suggestions on how to do the banner? any help would be welcome...

nephews all around
yesterday i spent my Sabbath afternoon visiting family - kuya garry 'n ate becky bought a house close to mine, so i invited myself over to hang out with 'em. it was really neat 'cause i got to see taylor, and auntie zeny was there too. the little troublemakers pictured below are quite the bundle of energy - we played all afternoon! griffin, cole, and connor enjoyed themselves crawling all over us, and even though they were shy at first and eyed max suspiciously, they were asking 'uncle max' to play all their games with them by the end of the night.

connor was riding his bike and cole wanted to ride one too... i didn't want them to fight over who got to ride the bike, so cole jumped on my back, and the other boys thought it'd be great fun to have all of them ride together! we didn't get very far...

here's a pic of connor on max's back - griffin jumped in on the fun

more updates
so many updates, i musta spent around 6 hours yesterday tweaking the html, but i don't quite remember the right way to do stuff so it took a long time... i figure that since i'm putting so much work into this thing i better post something! here are some of the changes i've made in the last few days:

1 - the poll is up and running and formatted the way i like (i thought it looked cheezy before). max also got me to change the cell padding because he didn't like the text running up to the edge.

2 - i have a new account with zorpia to host all my photos, and then i hotlink 'em. more photos coming soon!

3 - extended entries are now possible (and they even show up on the page!) now that i've learned how to put that in my template. if you click on 'more...' at the end of an entry you'll see the full entry on it's own page - good for extra long posts, or when i'm putting up a bunch'a pics

4 - link to my friends websites, and see my favorite websites

5 - all the pages now have the same template, except now that i'm trying a new font for my main page. the different pages all used to be outta sync cuz i didn't realize changes to the main template doesn't change the entire site. finally have it down, i think... let me know if you see discrepancies

CHANGES YET TO BE MADE
1 - rating the books and movies. i have some 'extras' that i can use and i think i can rate the books, but i'm not sure... we'll see

2 - i'm looking into banners... wanna use my photos but i don't know how to make 'em rotate randomly - like in camacho.tv. gotta ask my friends over there... =)

The rotating banners at camacho.tv are done with ExpressionEngine, the blog software I use for my site. Pretty much useless to you here.

However, there are lots of ways to rotate photos. So now is a great time to introduce to one of the best sites on the internet for budding web developers pro and hobbiest alike.

AListApart.com is an online webzine for web developers with lots of great articles written by the best guys on the net. Check this place out on a regular basis.

There is an article there on image rotation using php, which will probably work great on your site. You can read it here:

Two additional things.

1) You gotta start putting the pressure on Maxim to kick start his site. I checked it out yesterday and it hasn't been updated in a long time.

2) Upsaid says it offers RSS feeds. You should figure out how to offer an RSS feed for your own site.

RSS stands for "Real Simple Syndication". Basically a feed is a file that is created behind-the-scenes that has "headlines" of all your blog posts.

There are programs called News or Feed Readers that can read these feeds, which then link back to your website.

So basically, instead of surfing my 20 favorite websites everyday, wondering if there is new content, I open up my News Reader and check the latest headlines from those 20 sites. When i see something interesting, I click on a link which takes me to the website.

The latest version of FireFox even has this feature built in. They call it "Live Bookmarks" but its really an rss reader.

So if you had rss on your site, I'd add your feed to my news reader and I would be automatically receive the latest post summary from your site when you update instead of having to remember to check your site on a regular basis.

Its efficient.

the red hat club
when we went to the harry connick, jr concert this summer, there was a whole group of ladies wearing red hats. curiousity got the better of us and we asked them "why the red hats?"

apparently these ladies are part of a 50's and over social club. their bonding fact is that they wear red hats, and other than that, they do whatever fancies 'em. it was pretty cool, sorta eccentric, and extremely adorable!! it looked like they were totally enjoying life. =)

so today i went to the library, and i was searching for a book called "tears of a giraffe" by Alexander McCall Smith. couldn't find it where it was supposed to be shelved, but right in its spot was a book titled "the red hat club" by haywood smith. i picked it up solely because i remembered those lively ladies... and now that i'm at home with it, i'm loving the "warning" written by jenny joseph, which is written in the place the forward usually is. and it's so gonna be me =)

"When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example to the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practise a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple."

Apparently you can join if you are in your 40s, but you have to wear a lavendar dress and a pink hat, instead of purple and red!

Wow, that is the best explaination for the Red Hat Society that i've ever read. In fact, i'd better start practicing. Like she said, we don't want to shock everyone when it suddenly happens! What was that, eat all the samples and take flowers from other people's gardens? yeah!

html'ing
so i just started this blog, and i've been learning how to tweak the template. i now know how to add categories, i've changed the size of the "posted by kgrp sign at the bottom of each entry, and now i'm gonna try to change the entire design. just one thing at a time.

but, yesterday at school, someone asked me if i know frontpage.

let me revise that statement. yesterday, at my technology magnet school, a computer guy asked me if i know frontpage. he is currently "designing" our website. i put designing in quotes because seriously, how much designing can you do in front page? anyways, i told him i knew html and that i could help him out. what was the problem? he couldn't put a title on the page, for some reason when he created the page he forgot to put a title so it had a really generic name like "page #3" and he wanted to change it now. oh my gosh!!! i just opened the page in notepad and changed the title. and now i'm his main backup whenever he has a computer question.

c'mon now! how does the main computer guy at a technology magnet school not knokw how to do this?!?!?! i mean, i've learned all of this on my own during the summer, but he's THE computer guy at my school. how can something as simple as that be cause to look up to me?

anyhow, when he was saying he'd rely on me for backup, i used that leverage to lobby for administrator privileges to install stuff on my computer. might as well get something out of this, huh?

The curious incident of the dog in the night-time / Mark Haddon
i found this book through amazon - it was on a list of recommended books if you liked the da vinci code.

the curious incident of the dog in the night-time incorporates math, which i think is the bonding feature of the two books. however, this story is written from the point of view of an autistic boy who is brilliant at math but has eccentricies in other areas of life. one of the things i liked about it was that the chapters, or journal entries, were numbered by prime numbers - it started at 2, and went to 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, etc. small things like that are scattered throughout the book and i found it a fun read. since it's written from the boy's view point, it's a rather easy read, but it is insightful and has math gems hidden all through it. i think you might like it!

testing out new blogs
okay, hello everybody,

i'm tired of trying to update my website everytime i have something to say (notice how static it's been? no updating at all...) and so i've moved on to a blog site. i've been waiting to do this because i wanted to have my own host and blog stuff but i realized i'll probably never get around to that cause of pricing and taking the time to learn the script. one of these days, maybe next summer =)

anyways, you can see this blog post on kgrp.blogspot.com, kimichka.blogspot.com, [link], and kgrp.tblog.com. i'll be testing out these different hosts for the first few posts and see if either of them offers more, mostly i'm looking for a categories system where i can post to different categories instead of having one journal with all topics lost within it. any ideas? help me out...

kimi =)

sky captain and the world of tomorrow
watched this movie with gwyneth paltrow, jude law, and angelina jolie on friday with max, eric, brant, and another guy from insomniac.

it took a little bit of while getting used to because it was done in old school format, looking like an old sci-fi trying to capture the essence of the future. but after getting used to the goldish sheen of the black 'n whitish feature, it was easy to enjoy the movie.
